No ano 2000, um grande impacto de um meteoro na Antártida derreteu o continente gelado, elevando o nível dos mares. Chegou-se a conclusão que Deus estaria tentando eliminar a raça humana e previu-se o envio de "Angels" para acabar com a humanidade. Preparando-se para isso, criou-se uma grande organização, custeada por todo o mundo: A NERV. Seu objetivo seria o de proteger a humanidade, pesquisando formas de defesa. Assim nasceram os Evangelions (ou EVA's): Gigantescos robôs pilotados por alguém com o dom de "sincronizar" com o sistema.
