Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank) era uma missionária cristã, mas perdeu a fé após ver sua família ser brutalmente assassinada. Com isto ela passou a se dedicar a desmascarar supostos fenômenos paranormais, tarefa esta que lhe trouxe fama. Katherine é chamada para investigar estranhos acontecimentos numa pequena cidade em Louisiana, que, aparentemente, está sofrendo das pragas bíblicas. Ao investigar o caso, ela passa a acreditar que a ciência não pode explicar o que está ocorrendo ali e que, para ajudar os moradores locais, ela precisa recuperar sua própria fé.
