O Encontro
No interior da Inglaterra um casal de jovens cai em um buraco. O rapaz morreu na hora, mas a jovem viveu cinco dias e faleceu logo após ter sido encontrada. O padre Luke Fraser (Simon Russell Beade) pede para Simon Kirkman (Stephan Dillane), um estudioso do assunto, inspecionar o local. Paralelamente Marion (Kerry Fox), sua mulher, atropela uma jovem e, ao levá-la ao hospital, fica sabendo que é Cassie Grant (Christina Ricci). Marion fica surpresa quando o médico lhe informa que Cassie sofreu apenas ferimentos leves, pois parecia um choque violento. Cassie só demonstra estar desorientada, mas isto é considerado perfeitamente normal, pois sua memória pode ter sido um pouco afetada. Rápida e informalmente se torna a babá de Michael (Harry Forrester) e Emma (Jessica Mann).
