Francesco Dellamorte é o zelador do cemitério de uma pequena cidade. Há um mistério naquele local que ninguém consegue explicar, mas que todos parecem aceitar com naturalidade: os mortos voltam à vida. São os ossos do ofício de Dellamorte, que se resigna a ter de tratar de filas de zumbis que se dirigem à sua casa (no próprio cemitério) e levam um tiro no centro da cabeça. O herói lamenta o seu destino e julga-se amaldiçoado, a começar pelo seu nome que parece condicionar-lhe destino. Preferia chamar-se Francesco Dellamore. O seu ajudante Gnaghi não é obeso por coincidência; é o seu Sancho Pança, companheiro numa cruzada em que os moinhos de vento são os mortos que se recusam a estar mortos.
